As Lisbon is an important weekend destination for the Spanish and English, we will try to make an itinerary to visit Lisbon in 48 hours. We will assume that you arrive on a Friday afternoon and return Sunday on the same hour.

Late night arrival day: La Baixa

If you have the afternoon available you can start by visiting the neighborhood of La Baixa. A good start is to start at the Plaza de los Restauradores where the magnificent building of Hotel Eden is located. In this square begins Avenida da Liberdade, the most important of Lisbon, which ends in the Marques de Pombal Square, where modern Lisbon begins.

Next to it is the Rossio Square with the National Theater and its famous Nicola café. This square is one of the most lively places in Lisbon. From here you can approach the Figueira suqre with its picturesque mansard houses and offers a good view of the Castle of St. George.

These three squares are very close to one another, barely a hundred steps. From Figueira Square, you will see the elegant Rua Augusta pedestrian street that, through an Arc de Triomf, enters the Commerce Square. You can not forget the two guild streets that cross Rua Augusta: Rua Aurea and Rua da Prata.

If you are tired you can take tram number 12 in which, through its route, we will get an idea of ​​this neighborhood.

The area is very atmospheric and it will be easy to find a place to dine and have a coffee or a drink before resting.

Tomorrow 1st day, St George castle, Alfama and Park of Nations.

First of all, the ideal is to buy a transport allowance for the whole day and you will pay for it. Although you have arrived in Lisbon by private car, you should leave it parked.

To start the route you will have to approach to Figueira Square where you can take the tram 28 that leads to the doors of the St George Castle, in the place called Largo das Portas do Sol with a great view of Lisbon and the Tagus. At its feet, two old and picturesque neighborhoods extend: La Mouraria and La Alfama. The Alfama is an old fisherman's neighborhood with little streets to walk without haste.

If we have visited the castle and it has become late we can eat in some of its modest and popular restaurants, we can even meet with fados live.

Now the ideal is to take one of the buses that lead to the Park of Nations. This is the area where the 1998 Exhibition took place, now the leisure center, the Casino de Lisboa, and culture. You can admire the colossal and modern Vasco da Gama Bridge, the largest in Europe, and enjoy the Oceanarium.

Afternoon night 1st day: Chiado and Barrio Alto.

To get to these neighborhoods it is best to take tram 28, Elevador de Santa Justa or Elevador Da Gloria which is in the same Restauradores Square.

In Chiado, which was rebuilt after the fire of 1988, its most important streets are those of Carmo, with the ruins of the church of the same name not reconstructed to remember the great earthquake, and Garret. It is an elegant and bohemian neighborhood called the "Montmartre" of Lisbon.

Common place of encounter in Rua Garret is A Brasileira coffee, in whose terrace a sculpture represents Fernando Pessoa.

The Barrio Alto, which we arrive on Rua Misericordia, has numerous cafes, bars and restaurants, as well as antique shops. Probably, together with La Alfama, be the best neighborhood to listen to fados.

After dinner there will be no lack of places to have a drink in this neighborhood and if there are forces you can choose to go to Santo Amaro, Santos or Alcántara to move the skeleton.

Tomorrow 2nd day: Belém

The neighborhood of Belém is the most spectacular in Lisbon as it has two jewels of the city: the Monastery of the Jeronimos, with a visit to its Church and Cloister and the Tower of Belém, monuments that alone justify a trip to Lisbon. The advantage of visiting Bethlehem on a Sunday morning is that many of your visits are free.

You can get to Belém from the Plaza do Comercio with tram 15.

In Belém you will also find the 25th of April Bridge, the Monument to the Discoveries, the National Carriages Museum and, of course, its famous cupcakes.

It will be late, but in 48 hours you will have seen Lisbon enough to know that you have to return.
