Castle of St. George
The Castle of São Jorge (Castelo de São Jorge) is one of the most famous monuments of Lisbon. Both day and night the image stands out at the top of the hill of San Jorge, the highest in Lisbon and where the neighborhoods Castelo and La Alfama are located.
Built in the 5th century by the Visigoths, the Castle of St. George was enlarged by the Arabs in the 9th century and modified during the reign of Alfonso Enríquez. In 1938 he underwent a complete restoration.
Its period of maximum splendor extended from the middle of the 13th century until the beginning of the 16th century, when the castle was occupied by the kings of Portugal.
As evidence of its past, Phoenician, Greek and Carthaginian remains are currently being recovered.
Visiting the Castle of St. George
The visit will take you more than half a day, since the area is quite large. Besides the castle with its eleven towers in the same grounds there is a small museum, a bar and a restaurant. After visiting the fortress it is advisable to take a small tour around the nearby streets.
From the top of the fort you will get the best views from the east side of Lisbon.
You can take advantage of the visit to the castle to visit the Cathedral of Lisbon, located just a few minutes walk.
