The Alfama
At the foot of the castle of St. George, between this and the sea, is this humble old suburb of fishermen, Lisbon essence, a neighborhood of smells and feelings, timid life, home of fado: expression of the melancholy of the Portuguese people.
The neighborhood of La Alfama was already inhabited in Visigothic times. The Romans left testimony in the ruins of the Roman Theater (1st century BC) located on Rua da Saudade and inside the cathedral. Most of the Christian churches were destroyed in the earthquake.
From the upper part of the Alfama, next to the castle, we will have a magnificent view of the entire neighborhood that goes down to the Tagus and the port itself.
As it could not be otherwise, in the Alfama is the Fado Museum.

Its steep and narrow streets, which inspired the most beautiful verses of fado, are not intended for traffic.
To get to the top of the neighborhood you can choose to take a walk from the center or take the nostalgic tram 28, a nice and comfortable option that will leave us in the upper part of the neighborhood.
